Resolving 429 Too Many Requests & 529 Overloaded Errors

When integrating with large language models, you may encounter 429 Too Many Requests or 529 Overloaded errors. These status codes indicate that the upstream provider has throttled your request due to rate limits or temporary capacity constraints.

Why This Happens in Shared API Pools

Most standard API keys operate within a shared resource pool. In this model, your requests compete for compute capacity with thousands of other users.

  • 429 (Too Many Requests): You have exceeded the per-minute or per-day token limit allocated to your tier.
  • 529 (Overloaded): The provider's infrastructure is temporarily saturated. Even if you are within your limits, the shared pool is busy, and your request is dropped to protect system stability.

This shared architecture leads to unpredictable latency and intermittent failures, especially during peak usage hours.

Immediate Mitigation: Exponential Backoff

While implementing retry logic does not increase your throughput, it prevents your application from crashing or flooding the API with failed requests. Below is a Python implementation of exponential backoff with jitter.

import time
import random
import requests

def fetch_with_backoff(url, headers, max_retries=5):
    for attempt in range(max_retries):
        response = requests.get(url, headers=headers)

        if response.status_code in [429, 529]:
            # Calculate delay: 2^attempt seconds + random jitter
            delay = (2 ** attempt) + random.uniform(0, 1)
            print(f"Rate limited (Status {response.status_code}). Retrying in {delay:.2f}s...")
            time.sleep(delay)
            continue

        return response

    raise Exception("Max retries exceeded due to rate limiting.")

# Example usage
# response = fetch_with_backoff("https://api.openai.com/v1/chat/completions", headers={"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY"})

The Permanent Solution: Fikra API Reserved Throughput

Retry logic is a band-aid. To eliminate 429 and 529 errors permanently, you need dedicated infrastructure.

Fikra API offers Growth and Scale tiers that provide reserved throughput. Unlike shared pools, your compute capacity is isolated and guaranteed.

  • Growth Tier: Ideal for startups and mid-sized apps. Includes higher rate limits and priority queuing.
  • Scale Tier: For enterprise workloads. Features dedicated GPU allocation, SLA-backed uptime, and zero-throttle guarantees.

By moving to Fikra API, you stop competing for resources and start scaling predictably.

Get Started

Visit fikraapi.co.ke to upgrade your tier. Our base API endpoint is https://api.fikraapi.co.ke/v1.

Note: Migrating to a reserved tier typically takes less than 5 minutes. Simply update your API key and base URL.
